The coinage reform of 1816 produced gold the only standard. The guinea of 21 shillings was superseded by the sovereign of twenty shillings, though the previous survived as a dollars of account until finally decimalization in 1971. Valued at a single pound and at ten shillings respectively, the sovereign and its fraction, the 50 percent sovereign, thereafter grew to become the basic models of Britain’s gold coinage. Items valued at two lbs and five kilos were mostly confined to infrequent pattern and commemorative concerns.
