Born in 1928 in Albany's North Stop, Kennedy attended Public School 20, the Christian Brother's Academy, and Siena School prior to pursuing a profession in journalism. He joined the Post Star, in Glens Falls as a sports reporter and, soon after staying drafted in 1950, worked for an army newspaper in Europe. Upon his discharge he joined the Albany Instances-Union. In 1956 he accepted a task with a newspaper in Puerto Rico, in which he met and would shortly marry Daisy (Dana) Sosa, an actress and dancer. (The Kennedy's have three youngsters--Dana, Katherine and Brendan.) Kennedy became managing editor of the fledgling San Juan Star in 1959, only to quit two a long time later to go after producing fiction complete-time.

In San Juan, Kennedy took a training course with novelist Saul Bellow, who mentioned of Kennedy's early operate, "He could take materials from skid row and compose about these folks as [if they have been as] fully human as anyone else.
