task--The Wall Street Journal characterizes the ebook as "usually admiring"--but Wonderful Soul has been making headlines for its salacious particulars and catalogs of Gandhi's hypocrisy. It seems the Indian leader might not have been such a great soul right after all.

Amongst the juicier tidbits: Gandhi routinely slept nude with his teenage fantastic-niece and other young females. He didn't feel much of black individuals, referring to South African natives as "Kaffirs" (a expression today regarded as hugely offensive) and complaining that "they are troublesome, very dirty and live like animals." He appeared weirdly alright with fascists, praising Mussolini and addressing Hitler as "my friend" in a letter.

And he was evidently in really like with a German architect and bodybuilder named Hermann Kallenbach, for whom he left his wife in 1908 and with whom he invested the next 6 years. Gandhi wrote to Kallenbach about "how totally you have taken ­possession of my human body," made the German promise not to "seem lustfully on any girl," and gave himself and Kallenbach the nicknames "Higher House" and "Reduce Property," respectively.
